A Blast from the Past
I was going through stuff that I'd let accumulate over the years when I came across an old ad that had been taped to the floor of the entrance to the CoHo at Stanford

It was early '99, just before I graduated, and the words resonated with me instantly, so I picked it off the pavement intending to do something about it. Five years on, the spirit of the ad still inspires me.

Strangely enough, I noticed the big, bold title for the first time today. It's a bit of a pity - I think the whole thing would have been much better without it. After all, isn't it remotely possible that someone fits the small print but not the heading? ('though I'm probably not one of them..)

So whaddaya think? Should I write them? The site is still up...

i think why they are looking for atheists is becos they want people who don't want to believe something becos they have 'faith' in it, but that they have scientifically proven its truth.

on another note, no one can really lay claim that only they have the truth. i tend to like the story of the 5 blind men trying to tell the others what an elephant is, from what they can touch of the elephant. some may find their truth in science, while others in some other metaphysical form ?

the more important factor in my opinion would be one's pursuit of the truth, in whichever form that it could possibly exist in :)

well, I think it's because you have to write to "them" first?!

But I agree about the blind men and the elephant - each of their truths is "true" - just incomplete.

You can also look at science as a one possible metaphor to interpret the world around us, and religion as another. Each has its strengths and weaknesses insofar as they help human beings make sense of their life in this world.

I did about a year ago and have to admit I found the people to be really cool and, dare I say it, way too intelligent.

I'm just a funny guy but man, I thoroughly enjoy their company.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul. I take it you're referring to Sifter.

Yes, I've already signed up, and will have to get on the mailing lists.

The "way too intelligent" bit is a little intimidating.

You guys meet up often?
