Hmm looks like might be more than that - see my reply to [info]zenhiao's comment.

wow nice pic.

hmm. just how fast does discovery go? 45s seems a bit long. i would have thought more like 15s?
partly also because of the exposure of the rest of the scene. but i guess that really doesn't say very much except about the relative brightness of the shuttle's trail vs the lights on the boats.

Actually, it looks like it's more than just 45s, maybe a minute or more!

See the photos from NASA's site: by 00:00:46, Discovery hasn't climbed that high yet..

hey thanks for the timed photos!

although it is hard to estimate precisely cos of the different angles and POV it is def much more than 15s and most likely more than 45s too. a minute or more?

oh and what the other photos do show is that the shuttle flare is MUCH brighter than anything else around it. which also points to a much longer exposure for the orginal shot. i wonder now if the photographer might have had to filter the light as well as stopping down to the smallest aperture?

Haha - not a clue! Depends on how small the aperture goes. Also, the boats look pretty sharp for a long exposure (they'd be bobbing up and down), though it's possible the original shot was at a very high resolution, and the motion blur doesn't come through in the small resized pic.
