Simon Wiesenthal - Humanity's Conscience?

Simon Wiesenthal - RIP at the ripe old age of 96. I think he probably outlived most of the Nazi murderers he hunted down.

The Washington Post has a good (long) article in memoriam here.  A shorter, lighter-reading one here.

(Registration information, if required, can be found at BugMeNot.)

The horrors of genocide should not have happened, yet such barbarism continues today under the radar of most of the world. All it takes it for good people to succumb to their prejudices and fears, and stay silent.

You can't count the cost of doing it. You just know your live wouldn't be worth living if you didn't.

That's what drove him.

But to not count the cost is a deadly thing. It's not being prepared for the sacrifices to be made. It could mean biting off more than you can chew. It can mean living in bitterness and regret. But to count the cost, understand the sacrifices, and then to still do it...that I think is a real solid committment.

Re: Simon Wiesenthal - Humanity's Conscience?

As well he should...he was an inspiration to all of us. And, may his soul rest in peace and know that he helped shape the conciseness of a people. I'm sure that if he was not as forthright in the battle to bring to justice a few perpetrators of an atrocity that is still unimaginable in its scale, others would have continued to occur.
